Wānaka Link
Wānaka Link
This trail will link Wānaka into the Central Otago trails and ultimately onto Dunedin, following the mighty Clutha Mata-Au river from its outlet at Lake Wānaka through to the man-made Te Wairere Lake Dunstan, joining at Smiths Way.
Starting at Wānaka, the trail follows the Albert Town to Luggate Boulders track. This section will be enhanced to provide a wider path and a gentler gradient, ensuring an accessible and enjoyable journey for all.
Meandering downstream, the trail guides adventurers through farmlands and along the rivers edge, with panoramic views of lush vineyards.
A highlight along the Wānaka Link trail is the Bendigo Wildlife Management Reserve. This reserve area, managed by Otago Fish and Game Council, is a wonderful example of the preservation of our precious wetland habitats.
The trail connects to the already built trail at Smiths Way, taking you through to the Lake Dunstan Trail, which in turn connects through to Clyde, Alexandra, Roxburgh, Lawrence and Waihola (near Dunedin Airport).
In total, the Wānaka Link comprises 33 km of new trail, 22.5 km upgraded trail. Now including the section from Smiths Way to Cromwell Heritage Precinct, the Wānaka Link creates a trail that is 72km in length.
